why is change so hard?

i think one of the hardest things we can do in life is change.

not because we don’t know what needs to change, but because of everything that comes with actually doing it.

sometimes we can spend years knowing that something isn’t working, feeling it in our bodies, seeing it in our relationships or recognizing it in the way we move through our days. and yet, we stay.

why?

because change asks something of us that isn’t always comfortable.

first, we have to be honest with ourselves.

admitting that something isn’t working can be hard. it can bring up guilt, shame, disappointment or even embarrassment. we may wonder how we got here, why we stayed so long or why we didn’t see things differently sooner.

but being honest with ourselves isn’t an admission of failure. it’s an opportunity to stop living in denial and start meeting ourselves where we actually are.

then come the decisions.

sometimes change means making decisions we never thought we’d have to make. decisions that affect our relationships, our family, our work or the life we’ve spent years building.

and these decisions aren’t always black and white. sometimes there isn’t a perfect answer. there is just the choice that feels most honest, even when it comes with uncertainty or sadness.

change also asks us to become more conscious.

we have to start looking at our own patterns. the things we repeatedly do, the reactions we have, the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we contribute to the very situations we say we want to change.

this takes awareness. it takes a willingness to pause before reacting, to question what we’ve always believed and to recognize that perhaps the way we’ve been approaching life is no longer working.

and then there is perhaps the hardest part of all: letting go of who we’ve been.

we become attached to our identities. to the roles we play, the people we are in relationships, the routines we know and even the struggles that have become familiar.

letting go of an old version of ourselves can feel like losing a part of who we are. in some ways, it can feel like a death. we know we can’t keep living the same way, but we don’t necessarily know what life will look like without it.

so we avoid it. we put it off. we convince ourselves that maybe things will get better or that perhaps we can just make a few small adjustments.

but eventually, we have to decide whether we are willing to keep repeating what we know or become open to something different.

i don’t think change is about getting everything right or suddenly becoming a completely different person.

i think it’s about being willing to tell ourselves the truth, taking responsibility for our choices and giving ourselves permission to outgrow the things we once thought we needed.

and perhaps we need to be a little kinder to ourselves along the way.

after all, we are human. we get comfortable. we get attached. we get scared. we sometimes know exactly what we need to do and still struggle to do it.

that’s okay.

we don’t have to change everything overnight.

but we do have to be willing to stop looking away from the things we know need our attention.

because a different life often begins with the willingness to make a different choice.
