the more technology advances, the more i find myself thinking about the simple things that make us human.
our ability to feel something deeply. to sit with another person and really listen. to notice the world around us. to have a thought of our own, to question it, to change our minds, to learn through experience.
we are entering a time when almost anything can be answered, created, explained or accomplished through technology. artificial intelligence can write for us, think alongside us, organize our lives and give us information in seconds.
and there is nothing wrong with using these tools. they can be incredibly helpful.
but i wonder if, in making so many things easier, we might slowly forget the value of doing some things ourselves.
there is something important about taking the time to figure something out. about having a conversation that doesn’t need to lead anywhere. about sitting quietly without reaching for something to fill the space. about making a mistake and learning from it rather than immediately looking for an answer.
life isn’t just about having access to information. it’s about what we do with the experience of being alive.
we develop awareness by paying attention. we develop understanding by experiencing things. we develop connection by being willing to show up, listen and be present with another person.
no amount of information can replace the feeling of being understood. no technology can experience a sunset for us, feel the warmth of someone’s hand, or know what it is like to sit across from someone and share a genuine moment.
these things might seem ordinary, but they are a big part of what makes life meaningful.
i don’t think we need to fear technology or turn away from the changes happening around us. the world will continue to evolve, and there is much we can learn and benefit from.
but perhaps we need to become a little more intentional about how we use it.
to know when to put the phone down. when to stop searching for answers. when to trust ourselves enough to make a decision. when to give someone our full attention.
we don’t need to outsource every thought, feeling or experience.
there is still value in our own curiosity, our own perspective, our ability to feel and our capacity to connect with one another.
the more advanced our world becomes, the more important it is to remember the things that don’t need upgrading.
our humanity.
and maybe that’s something worth paying attention to.
